Vilcabamba, Ecuador... It's where we want to call home. (part 1)

It's been almost two months since Shar and I returned from Vilcabamba, and not a morning has passed without me raising the shades and half expecting to see the majestic Mandango Mountain greeting me at the start of another perfect day.

We started on the southern end of Vilcabamba at Izhcayluma Hosteria. Wow! What an amazing place to relax and unwind! The views were incredible and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The main restaurant was a great place to eat and start the day.

We were very close to town and several hiking trails were readily available ranging from easy to difficult. Shar and I decided that the best way to get to know the country and people was to immerse ourselves into both. We started out by hiking the San Jose trail to get a view of the Valley and all it has to offer.

The hike was long as parts of the trail had been washed out from recent rains but the views were spectacular and so worth the effort to reach. We passed several locals on our hike and were warmly greeted and generally felt very welcome. Shar and I agree that the hike was a very bonding and worthwhile endeavor and one that I am very glad that we took together.
After our hike, it was time to enjoy some delicious food in the restaurant at Izhcayluma. I don't think we had a single thing that was less than incredible! We really appreciated the variety and mixed international cuisine that was offered.

The restaurant was a very warm and friendly place to enjoy a meal and converse with fellow travelers. We easily met several people from all around the world who were all eager to share their tales of travel. After eating it was time to relax in the bar! This had to be the most laid back, patron friendly bar that we have ever been in! Truly a bar in paradise...

We enjoyed our time at Izhcayluma, and appreciated all of the beautiful scenery and wonderful people that we met there, but it was time to relocate to the north end of town for the second half of our week in Vilcabamba. We chose the Madre Tierra hosteria for our next stop, and were we ever glad that we did...

to be continued...
